image.show() size question

On my Raspberry Pi I can acquire an image with getImage() and display it in 2 ways like this:

disp = Display()
img.save(disp)

or
img.show()

The first method (img.save(disp)) opens a largish window (640 x 480 ish) but img.show() opens a tiny window (could be 64 px wide).

1) Can anyone tell me why this is? I see lots of example videos and tutorials where the author simply calls show() and the image is a 'normal' size.
2) What controls the size of the window which opens when I call Display()?
3) What controls the size of the window which opens when I call show()?

Thanks.
