I'd probably go with the highest resolution that you can afford, so long as it works under your OS. Personally, I picked up a Logitech C920 (1080 vid / 15 MP stills) and have been pretty happy with it under both Windows 7 and Ubuntu Linux. Honestly, I don't think SimpleCV really cares so long as it can recognize the device.

P.S. Why did you mark this question as a wiki? Doesn't seem to apply.

I use Ubuntu 14.04 with a i3 processor (hence 15mp probably would be too much)? P.S.:Yeah, doesn't seem to apply.

I'm using 14.04 with an i5 2.6GHz processor (ThinkPad T530 with 16GB RAM and a 256GB SSD) and no problems. The hi-res stills don't seem to be as much as of a processor hog as the 1080 HD video. Tried running it hooked up to a Raspberry Pi Mod B... not good ;)

It's a i3-Intel® Core™ i3-3217U CPU @ 1.80GHz × 4 to be precise (Lenovo Edge 130). RAM shows as 3.7GB under Ubuntu 14.04. Around 100GB SSD. I want to film ravens. What is your recommendation? Also the C525 seems from a newer series. I saw a youtube comparison which stated, they've gotten worse.

Unless you get those ravens really close to the webcam - like within a couple (2-3) feet - I don't know that having uber mega-pixel stills or HD vid will really help, if the image is out of focus. That was the problem I ran into with my cameras - both the C920 and a Raspberry Pi camera (5MP) - when trying to take clear, detailed pictures of something more than a few feet away. Whether its an issue for computer-vision purposes would be a good question for someone more well versed in the subject than I.

Still ordered the C930e now. I also have a CCTV-network camera, but couldn't get it to run so far under Linux. Maybe it will be possible to close the laptop somehow and keeping it running, while putting it under the table. Ravens are intelligent birds though: They might be afraid of a close cam.
