Will there ever be a Mountain Lion SimpleCV install package for non-Linux gurus?

Even after JHawkins' detailed instructions, I couldn't get passed installing homebrew on my MacBook Pro because of a strange PATH error.

The more I Googled the deeper I got into command line nightmares and fiddling with System configuration files which I am not experienced enough to be messing with.

Some bits of advice out there were out of date and a lot of it was conflicting.

I then gave up and tried to install it on a virgin Mac mini. I got all the way up to step 15 and then I started getting a lot messages like "warning: no files found matching '*.html' under directory 'docs'".

I continued on hoping that it might be OK but 'simplecv' does not run at all. It is a shame because I have used SimpleCV before and it is very easy to use.

It is too bad you need years of Linux experience just to install the damned thing!

Is there a chance that there will be an install package someday, or do I need to hire someone to install it.

I feel your pain: SimpleCV needs pygame, pygame needs SDL and portmidi. SDL installed via brew can by default not found by the pygame configure script (I changed that). portmidi as installed by brew does not come with the static library that pygame wants (.a), only .dylib. WTH?

I wish some of the stuff would be optional, as I am pretty sure I don't need SDL and portmidi just to try out findBlobs!!

I am really sorry you are having problems. We are aware that there are a variety of build issues on a lot of different problems. Part of this is because of how many dependencies we have in the library. If one of those dependencies fails it can break the build. In our last release we tried to build out super-pack installers for all of the major releases but these were far from perfect. We're always trying to improve and we're always looking for help.

Part of the reason we created this forum is so that people could report issues and we could address them as needed. If you are having issues please let us know and we will try to help. We have big plans for this summer and we really hope that we can improve the build process.

Hi Macro,

I am sorry to hear that you are having so much trouble installing. I agree about the conflicting info - you see just as many posts telling you to run xyz to fix your problem as you do those telling you not to do xyz. It can be frustrating.

I am by no means a pro, but if you are interested, I'd be happy to see if I can get your install moving again. We can do a Google Hangout or some other type of screen share and run through it together.

Reach out to me here on if you are interested.

Have a good one, and good luck.
